You recall your favorite multi-player combat computer game too well. You
start out at level one, and fight very weak creatures such as rats.
Killing a small number of them is enough to boost you to level two. And
killing the same small number plus a few more will get you to level three.
And around there, you might be able to defeat a creature that is slightly
tougher than a rat, but still weak. And soon enough your level will be sky
high. In any case, you will gain strength and perhaps pick up a real weapon.
Now you wonder if you can just do the same thing in real life. Might be a very good way of getting yourself in shape. Or maybe this whole idea is ludicrous. Well it can't hurt to get started. You head outside the town, near that smelly and graffiti infested bathroom that you visited earlier and look around for a rat to kill. You spot a small bronze dagger in a muddy ditch. You pick it up. You then spot a rat moving slowly along a wall. You approach the rat, with the small bronze dagger ready. You reach it and kneel. Down comes the dagger on the rat. Miss! The rat turns round and bites your hand painfully. You sense that you have just lost one hit point. How you sense this, you have no idea. You ignore that loss and make another stab. The dagger goes through the middle and the rat dies. In a moment, its carcass turns into a pile of bones. No gold coin. No weapon or armor or anything else that might be useful.
