"Before we get out of here, we'd better make sure that our presence here
won't be known." Mavra turns to you. "Your room computer will only accept
commands from you. Could you ask it to stop recording, both video and
audio, and to delete all recordings made since just before I arrived. It
has to be you who asks it, as it can identify you as the rightful room
occupier from your voice."
"Won't that look suspicious?" you ask. "Yes. But better that than that they have available a record of who visited you and what was said. I just hope that they haven't managed to get any unauthorised spy devices in here that would give them a live feed." "I thought that tampering with computer records was supposed to be very difficult?" "To alter them undetectably, yes. But just to delete a chunk, with it being obvious that that has been done, is not a problem." "I see. Computer, please stop recording and delete everything from two minutes before Mavra arrived." "Done," it replies. Then your new allies hustle you away, and take you through a confusing maze of narrow corridors. "Unlike in the main corridors, there are no surveillance devices here," one of them explains. "These corridors aren't known to most people. They are only used by maintenance techicians and the like, to get to otherwise inaccessible areas." As you walk, you and the others discuss how you can best be protected. "We could disguise you," Mavra suggests. "Would that work?" you ask dubiously. "Well, nobody seemed to recognise me when I went to the party in disguise," she points out. [429] "It might work for a few hours but probably not for much longer than that, given that the people that we are dealing with seem to have allies within the police," one of the aliens says. "I think that we need to get her off the starbase as quickly as possible, before they can trace her." "How do we get her through emigration without their finding out before the ship leaves?" another of the aliens asks.
