Jacques was running so fast that when he suddenly escaped the darkness, he didn’t immediately notice and ran straight into the long dinner table of the dining area. His stomach impacting the table from the short side, his body lurched forward and he sprawled over the top of it and onto an assortment of fine dishes, glasses, and silverware. Jacques let out a loud, painful, groan, and hugged his stomach, which was in so much pain that he didn’t even notice the forks or broken glass shards that pricked his body. He wondered if he was going to be sick.
But he laid there for minutes and minutes and after a quarter hour, the pain began to recede to a tolerable level as did the feeling of nausea. He was going to be OK. And he would take the stomach pain and nausea over being in that darkness anytime. He finally opened his eyes (which he had kept closed while he rested) and looked around. Although it was mostly dark, there were several sources of faint light from a number of different areas: A lit lamp near the staircase, a lit fire place in a living room, a nightlight in the kitchen area, and every candle in the chandelier above him burning. Enough light illuminated for him to guess where he was: he was in a giant house of some sort, probably a mansion. Everything had a very old-fashioned feel, reminding of the mansions he saw in movies that took place during World War II.Finally becoming aware of the sharp objects against his body, he got up, careful not to cut himself on anything and got off the table. He turned one of the chairs so that it was facing away from the table and sat down. The darkness that he had escaped from didn’t appear to be there anymore. The side of the table he ran into was instead facing a wall only a few feet away. And the only thing of interest there was a very ugly painting of an old woman. He seemed to be safe for now. But where was he?
