The secret passage
The Black Void - Episode 77

I see the other women scattering around the room, while I stand frozen on
the spot. “What should I do?” a panicky voice inside me asks. I quickly
scan the room, and I notice a narrow passage on the left, just a few feet
away. It is unguarded and seems like a safe hiding spot. I hold my breath
as I try to make a decision.
“Staying in line would be safest. I am sure I will find out what is going on somehow, when I just stay put,” I try to convince myself. “But what if they are planning to do something terrible? It’s better just to get out of here. I could make a run for it. That man isn’t really going to come after me and shoot me, is he?” I immediately get my answer, when I see a woman making a leap for the hallway. Just when her feet touch the ground, I hear how the machine gun opens its fire. I try to turn my head quickly, so that I don’t have to see how her brains splatter over the concrete floor. I hear screams all around me. I shouldn’t think now. I should just go. In the midst of the commotion, I move slowly towards the passage. No one is paying attention to me. The last thing I see when I walk backwards into the narrow space, is the guard dragging a lifeless body to the side of the room. It is dark in here. I get on my hands and knees to make sure that I don’t trip over anything. My hands can only feel stones and dust, while I crawl slowly down the passage. The darkness seems to get blacker and blacker the further I go. After a few hundred feet I can no longer hear any screams, and I rest for a little, feeling safe and comfortable in the dark tunnel. I dig my fingers into the cold sand, trying not to think about what I have just witnessed. When I bring my hand back up, I noticed that I am holding something small and heavy. Something made of metal. I trace the shape with my fingertips. It’s a key! I swiftly get back on my knees and I start to examine the walls for something like a door. After only several minutes I find a handle and something that feels like a keyhole. I turn the key inside it and I hear a click. It must be open.
