What Can I Do?

As the two men cross blades, it occurs to me that Teran has been unusually careless in not checking whether Maris had a concealed weapon on his person, but it's not much use worrying about that now. With Maris's attention fully fixed on his opponent, I feel that I ought to try to intervene to help Teran in some way. The trouble is, not only do I not have a weapon but there isn't even any object in the shack such as a heavy vase with which I could improvise. I consider letting out a scream to distract Maris. The trouble is that doing so would be just as likely to distract Teran.

Not being able to think of another way of helping Teran, I manoeuvre into a position behind Maris, and then remove my travelling robe and try to bring it down over his head.

  1. It works. With Maris blinded for a moment, Teran is able to run him through. I realise that this isn't wholly good news, as if Maris dies he won't be able to tell us where Don really is. (But probably we couldn't have made him tell us anyway.)
  2. It doesn't work. Seeing the robe out of the corner of his eye, Maris is able to fend it off with his free arm.
  3. Not only doesn't it work, but in making the attempt I get a cut to my arm from Maris's blade.
