"Poor Christine," I say. "I only had time for a rather superficial
reading of Gold Cheer Beaches, but even so I came to like her a
lot."
"The funny thing is," James says, "that though Her Beached Clogs is clearly the sequel, as far as I can recall it's just a straightforward adventure story, without any of the clever stuff that you described as being in the first book." "Do you think that you could find your copy? I'd like to check whether the author is Arthur Dodge Flassot again or if the book is by another anagram. If it's the latter, presumably implying that the sequel was written by a different author, then that might account for the difference in style. Of course it could be that it was the same author but he just ran out of ideas." As James goes inside to look for the book, I continue to admire the view from the balcony. I wonder about the forest that I can see away to the left. Didn't James tell me that the city of Tumbolia was infinitely large? [258] But then I remind myself that it could still be infinitely large, even if the Hotel California is near the edge. I think of the positive whole numbers. There are infinitely many of them, but "2" is still almost the smallest. Perhaps the position of the Hotel California could be thought of as analogous to that of "2" amongst the whole numbers? Of course the city covers a two dimensional area rather than being linear, but I don't think that should affect the principle. Something else occurs to me. If there are an infinite number of different books in the Tumbolian library, then isn't it almost impossible that, purely by chance, James should have in his possession the sequel to the book that I have myself? Maybe there really is some mysterious unknown power shaping events. I'm not very comfortable with that idea.
