Supernatural force or not, Jacques finds himself walking forward. His
body reacts in terror: He can feel sweat bleeding out of his armpits and
forehead and his stomach turning. His mind searches for an excuse, and
finds one. ” need a weapon.” He quickly spots one. Resting on the side of the house just to the right of the front door is a spade. It looks old but sharp. Jacques silently curses. He rummages through his head for another excuse: I should look in the other houses first, it’s too dangerous, the house could eat me… …the house could eat me. Now he knows he’s making up shit. Damn it, let me just find out what the hell’s going on. He breathes in silent for a minute or so and then walks forward. He quickly reaches the front door, grabbing the spade in the process. He can see the inside better now: Besides the red-carpet, furniture, and ascending staircase, there’s an old-fashioned piano in the back, the walls are light pink with small flower patterning, and at the top of the steps there a large glass door holding a balcony. Despite this, the room doesn’t have a feminine feel. Simply an old-fashioned feel.”Nothing out of the ordinary….” Jacques leans forward and peeks inside. He looks to the left: There is a hallway made with polished wooden walls and floor. There are four doors on each side of hall, plus one double door sits at the hallway’s end. Hanging on the walls are vivid paintings: From his angle, Jacques can make out a large commercial ship sailing across rough waters, a naked siren beckoning a lone sailor, dolphins and other sea life riding a giant wave, and small cay in a storm. All of the pictures were painted with dark colors and were probably made even darker with age.Jacques looks to the right: About half way down a similar fashioned hallway is Danielle, viewing one of the paintings. She nods to the painting, muttering to herself again, turns and opens the door nearest to her, (Second door to the left. Although Jacques now notices she has to open doors, like a living creature. This gives him hope.), enters, and disappears, closing the door behind her. Jacques doesn’t pursue her immediately. Horrid thoughts come to mind of him opening the door and her suddenly appearing and walking through him. He wonders if the spade will have any effect. Probably not. Some minutes pass and nothing happens. Slowly, Jacques enters the hallway. The pictures he passes are ocean-themed like the last ones: A mermaid watching a man lay on the shore’s sands, men trying to rescue a beached whale, Pirates and the British Royal Navy trading cannon balls, and…Jacques halts in front of the picture Danielle was observing. It’s a picture of a sea monster that looks like an octopus, with a tough rigid shell covering it and is colored (dark red), but with several differences. Unlike Octopuses, this monster has uncountable huge tentacles, at least a dozen eyes surrounding the head, and is enormous, probably the size of a football field: In the picture, the monster is attacking a village on an island. The painting is very explicit: Tentacles crush and wrap around people, turning them in messes of bloody flesh. They wrap around and crush huts and cabins. Few men try to fight; most flee instead. To the upper-right of the picture, a group of people are boarding a boat, unaware that a red tentacle is emerging from the water near it. It’s absolute hell. Mythology Jacques thought. Yet, Jacques felt a chill run through him. Mythology or not, it represented a chilling nightmare to all sailors, young and old. It makes his shovel feel useless and childish.Jacques muses for the meaning, and the only thing he can come up with is that this supernatural force knows his fears and is mocking him with it. But it doesn’t make sense. Otherwise, wouldn’t all of the pictures show something that disturbs him? He turns away from the picture, grabs the door handle of the door next to the disturbing picture (the one which Danielle entered) and slowly opens it. There are many stairs going down. At the bottom, Danielle has just finished descending them and quickly disappears beyond Jacques few.”What the devil was she doing all of those minutes?” He finds he doesn’t even care. Enough with waiting. Maybe she’s purposely leading him somewhere. That’s fine with him. Answers are his holy grail right now. He follows her down and sees her at the end of a short hallway, opening another door. Inside of it, Jacques can see a small worn- down room with candles lit just before Danielle closes the door. There are no other doors.
