Is Jacques's imagination playing tricks?

"The batteries must be dead," mutters Jacques to himself.

He climbs back through the window outside and heads to his boat to look for spare batteries. He puts down the flashlight and checks his spare battery compartment. He finds two spare batteries and then reaches for his dead flashlight. And he realizes that not only did he forget to turn off his flashlight, the flashlight is working just fine.

"Odd," mutters Jacques.

He notices his wife, Danielle in the corner of his eyes. And when he looks there is no one. "I am getting tired of my imagination playing tricks on me," he mutters once more.

Putting the spares batteries away and picking up his flashlight, Jacques reaches the broken window, and decides that he should aim his flashlight into the house to take a look. It is still dark inside, even though the flashlight is shining. He aims the flashlight at the outside wall of the house and can see the light shining on it. But when he aims the flashlight inside the house, no light can be seen. He turns the flashlight around so he could see the bulb shining in his face. And he moves the flashlight inside the house and the bulb goes dark as soon as it crosses where the window pane normally is located. And yet he could see light shining into his face. When Jacques brings the flashlight outside, he can see the lit bulb.

"My imagination is really playing tricks on me," mutters Jacques, feeling quite annoyed.

Once again, Danielle appears at the corner of Jacques's eyes. And disappears when Jacques takes another direct look in Danielle's direction.

1. Jacques climbs into the house and gropes his way around.
2. Jacques searches for Danielle exactly where he last saw her.
3. Jacques climbs back into his boat and speeds away from Loire because he is tired of the tricks being played by his imagination.
