More Concerning the Dreamers

The Black Void - Episode 5187

Whether or not I am a Dreamer, it may be a good thing for Anorkin to believe that I am. If he believes that I have great latent powers, then won't he be forced to treat me with far more respect? Perhaps there will be no more of his petty punishments. After Max left yesterday, he turned my wardrobe back to sackcloth and made me deaf once more. Perhaps I can now get him to reverse that.

First, though, I must find out more about the Dreamers. "Anorkin, what happened to the Dreamers?"

"As far as anyone knows, there haven't been any for the better part of a thousand years. No-one knows why. One of the legends about them says that some, at least, did not die, but mysteriously vanished never to be seen again. Now, back to the question of whether you are truly a Dreamer. Have you had many vivid, prophetic dreams? Have they come true?"

"Yes, I've had quite a number of dreams like that. Some have come true, but others have not - at least, not yet. One of the dreams which did come true was of our first meeting and of your shrinking me to doll size."

"Astonishing. What was the dream that you've just had?"

I describe it to him. "It terrified me," I tell him. "But it doesn't make any sense. The girl looked about seventeen. But if she was truly my daughter, then what I saw would have to be over sixteen years in the future. Yet I was in your library, with you present. I can't believe that my residence here will be so long term. And I didn't feel that I myself was significantly older than I am now."

"Remember that Dreamers can warp reality. You could have inadvertantly created that demoness. I said 'have created', but I mean at some point in the future. She might consider you as her mother in that case, even if she hadn't come from your womb."

That is an alarming thought. But if I really do have great powers then, if they might allow me to return to my own world, can I afford to turn my back on them? Does Anorkin have sufficient knowledge to allow me to develop and control my latent ability, assuming that I really possess it?

  1. I ask him that question.
  2. I ask him the other question uppermost on my mind: "Was anything ever mentioned about a black void and a silver disk in any place beside the Four Heroes? In connection with the vanishing of the Dreamers, for instance?"
  3. Whilst I am still thinking, he says: "In the circumstances, I think that I had better restore your hearing and revert your clothing to more suitable materials."
  4. Anorkin has another idea. "The demoness might have mistaken you for Naomi. Her children would be thirtyish by now.[4146] No-one knows what happened to them. They - like Naomi - might conceivably have developed the power to slow the appearance of ageing."
