The wizard's concentration was proof against Sara's attack; indeed he
never even noticed it, so fixed was his attention on Amergin. Unluckily
for him, his skull was less proof against the rock. He was hit full on,
and slumped unconscious to the ground.
Meanwhile Amergin had dived out of the way of the flames and avoided incineration by the narrowest of margins. Now he clambered a little shakily to his feet. "Thank you!" he said. "You probably saved my life. We had better get well away from here before he comes round, or things could get very nasty." "I didn't kill him, did I?" Sara asked, looking at the ugly bruise developing on the wizard's temple. Even though the wizard was very unpleasant, she didn't want to have his death on her conscience. Besides, Amergin had rather provoked him. He wasn't to know that, for all his threats, the bard was harmless. Amergin felt his pulse and pronounced it strong and steady. So, leaving the wizard behind, lying by the bank of the underground river, they headed back towards the far reaches of the cave from which Amergin had emerged. Fortunately there were enough of the mysterious glowing (and humming) blue crystals to light their way. "I wonder what happened to Kendra and Kipper," Sara said. "I don't want to find out, if it means meeting Kipper again." "What harm could he do us now? We've nothing left to steal."
