The incompetent leftovers of the pet-hunter ship had, between bouts of
drunkness and random making out, seemingly fixed the ship. It didn't run
at full speed, Decks 4 and 8 were completely uninhabitable and the
security cameras for the bridge were blasting full power. You reason the
people in distress wouldn't care.
You hide the ship behind the Dues Ex Machina Asteroid Belt and send out a
probe.
Several possible life-pod readings really close by. Possible. Could be
anything and investigating might risk being seen by the enemy.

You go investigate. The life pods are no match for the asteroids.

Feeling horrible, you wait until it's confirmed they are pods. Then you investigate.

A lucky break reveals they aren't lifepods. They are BOMBS!

Suddenly you realize that every ship in half a million light years is recieving footage of you in your tank-top and frilly unmentionables. And it's COLD on the bridge.

This is really advance lifepod technology. It correlates with your system and in moments, twelve more people, many trained officers, are on board. They forcefully take over the bridge in order to try and save more of their friends.
