You roll to the side of the road, and fall into a shallow ditch. But
getting even wetter and muddier than you were already is a price well
worth paying, for you are now out of sight. You hope that in the darkness
none of the bandits will have seen you or heard the squelch that you made
when you landed in the ditch.
You hear voices. "Here's the coachman. He must have been thrown off when the coach went over. He's out cold." "Never mind him. He won't have anything worth stealing. Let's see who is inside." There is a pause, then: "You there. Hand over your gold if you don't want to get hurt." Evidently the merchant has enough sense to do so, for you next hear the same voice - presumably that of the leader - again: "Was there anybody else in the coach with you?" "Not inside, no. But there was a girl riding up top with the driver. I gave her a lift in exchange for directions. Seems that she directed us into a trap." "She wasn't one of us, if that's what you were thinking...
