Anorkin and I say farewell to Max. As soon as the visitor has gone,
Anorkin turns to me, a scowl on his face. "I will not tolerate your
eavesdropping on me," he says. "I need to teach you that lesson. I shall
make the punishment fit the crime. Unless we have any visitors who want
to see you, you will spend the next week totally deaf. It will not impede
my instruction of you, since I can speak directly in your mind rather
than via your ears."
I had thought that, apart from our own voices, all was silent. But when the mage completes his spell, the profound silence that results makes me realise that even indoors in the middle of the night it is rarely totally silent. There is usually the ticking of a clock or the creaking of a floorboard to be heard. Now those sounds are suddenly gone, and the change is very noticeable. Then I hear Anorkin's voice in my mind. "Since you won't be able to hear the gong for breakfast, I will alert you like this. It is late, and I advise you to get some sleep. You have a busy day ahead of you tomorrow." As I return to my room, I wonder what Anorkin has planned for me. My first lesson in magic perhaps? Though will I be able to cast spells successfully if I can't hear my own voice? I go back to bed, and manage to get off to sleep fairly quickly. I have no dreams that I can remember. I am woken abruptly and rather unpleasantly by Anorkin's voice in my head telling me that breakfast will be ready in half an hour and that I had better not be late. I hastily perform my morning ablutions and get dressed.
