If I am supposed to pass myself off as Lady Naomi, I suppose that I will
need to know something about her life. That, presumably, is why Anorkin
has chosen this book for me.
I start reading without much enthusiasm. I hate to be Anorkin's tool, but I dare not defy him. To my surprise, though, I soon find myself gripped by what is a remarkable and exciting story. Naomi was evidently quite a woman - brave, compassionate, resourceful and intelligent - and it soon becomes clear why she was so loved by the Dorians. A little while later, Anorkin returns. "You seem to be making good progress," he observes, for I am already well into Chapter 2. "I came to tell you that your room is now ready. Come with me and bring the book with you. You may continue your reading there. You will join me for dinner this evening, by which time I shall expect you to have finished the book. Do not think of skipping any of it, as I shall ask you some questions about it over dinner to ensure that you have adsorbed its contents." He leads me from his study, out into the hall and then up a flight of stairs. When we reach the next floor, he opens the first door on the left. The room is better than I had been expecting, being quite large and well furnished. The bed is already made up, and I wonder whether Anorkin did that himself - whether manually or using magic - or if he has a housekeeper whom I've yet to meet. "Thank you," I say. "It looks very comfortable." "Good. Come down to dinner when you hear the gong. That won't be for another four or five hours, though." With that, he leaves.
