Taking Flight

The Black Void - Episode 3702

After whispering to the dragon, the mahout (Tomas, I remind myself) mounts up on the seat in front of me. "So the dragon can understand human speech?" I ask. Tomas looks dumbfounded that I would even need to ask such a question, then nods, muttering something under his breath. I wonder how such an intelligent and undeniably powerful creature can be made to carry humans at their will, but before I have a chance to ask, the dragon stirs.

I grip the sides of the seat tightly as the dragon unfurls its massive wings. It lurches forward a bit, then with a mighty screech pushes off the ground and begins to ascend. Once we gain some forward momentum, the beating of its wings mostly stops, and we glide along over the mountains.

As a novice pilot, I've flown before, but I've never felt the exhiliration of flying like this, with the wind in my face and the open air all around. It's amazing. Looking down, I can see we've cleared the mountains, and can make out the workings of civilzation down below. Houses, farms, roads, though we're too high up to see many people. Off in the distance there is a city, easily twice as large as Theras, with impressive towers dominating the skyline. I also notice that we're not alone in the sky. Though far off, I can see other dragon riders making their way across the skies, and what might just be an airship, floating lazily in the distance.

The journey takes scarcely an hour. "Hang on!" Tomas shouts. Seconds later we begin a long spiraling descent. The dragon touches down in a field in what appears to be a rural area. There is a solitary cottage on a hill up ahead. "Anorkin's a bit well...you'll see, but he's one of the best in Doria. If anyone can help you with your memory loss, it's him."

Tomas bangs loudly on the cottage door. When there is no answer, he pushes a bit, and the unlocked door swings open to reveal a man.

  1. He's probably about fifty or so. His shock of white, unkempt hair, white robe and dark goggles immediately conjures to mind the image of a mad scientist, rather than a mage or wizard.
  2. He is an elderly, sage looking fellow, with his face buried in a tome. He glances my way, seeming uninterested, then returns to reading his book.
  3. He is the man from my dream! [3678] I reflexivley back away. "What's wrong, My Lady?" Tomas asks.
  4. He's a young man, probably my age or a bit older. He is silent for a moment, then rushes and embraces me. "Naomi, my love, you've returned at last." This can't be Anorkin, can it?
