It's not the job I wanted, but it will provide me with both room and
board, plus a litle extra. There's no guarantee I could find the same
elsewhere before my money ran out. Besides, my aversion to the job has
more to do with what happened to me while employed, rather than the work
itself. So, I accept the position despite my misgivings. At least I'll be
well placed to monitor the situation regarding the smallpox outbreak.
I'm to start right away, so the bartender/inkeeper, a middle-aged, bespectacled man named Cole, shows me to a changing room. The outfit, while more revealing than my current dress (even owing for my makeshift alterations), is nevertheless fairly modest compared to some of the stuff I've had to wear over the past year. Once I get started, I settle into my role almost immediately. This place is a bit out of the way, so it's not very crowded. I feel more at ease than I have in a good while. Only my fears about my children and friends keep me from actually enjoying myself. Cole, like Zal so long ago, let it be known that unwelcome advances by customers wouldn't be tolerated. It's easier to serve drinks and act in an alluring way when I don't have to fear getting dragged off to someone's bedchamber.
