No doubt Karshin hopes to get me tipsy enough that he can persuade me into
his bed, but I'm confident that he won't succeed, so I accept his offer of
a drink. Perhaps I can learn something about the current situation in
Theras from him. I would like to know whether it would be wise for me to
detour to avoid the city.
"Good," he says when I accept. "So what will you have?" "A glass of red wine, please, if they have something that's not too rough. Just a small glass, mind, not an enormous goblet like yours." "Very well. I shan't be long." He heads off to the bar, and returns a few minutes later with a glass which, though not as large as his own, is still quite substantial. "This is the smallest measure that they sell wine in," he explains before I can say anything. He sets the glass down in from of me and sits down. I take a cautious sip, and discover that it's surprisingly good. "Not at all bad," I concede. "I'm glad that you approve. You must forgive me for assuming that you were still a 'working girl'. After all, you are displaying rather a lot of leg." I hastily rearrange the skirt of my dress. "I don't have a lady's saddle," I explain, "so have had to ride astride. I had no choice but to cut my skirt on each side." "Very resourceful of you," he says, as I take another sip of my drink.
