I trust Baras enough to tell him the whole story, holding nothing
back. "So what are your intentions?" Baras asks when I have finished. "Do
you mean to stay at Castle Van Alder indefinitely? It's surely going to be
very uncomfortable for all three of Don, Sara and yourself if you do.
That's assuming that Don has done what he said he would do, and told his
wife everything. [3455] If he hasn't, then it will only be uncomfortable
for the two of you. Or do you intend to leave and take the babies with
you? They have had almost six months to bond with their stepmother - and
for her to bond with them. As far as the babies are concerned, you will
seem like a stranger. Would it be good for them to be uprooted? And to be
denied the chance to be raised as nobility? What about the rights of their
father? Of course, he could simply refuse to let you take the babies, and
you wouldn't be able to do anything about it."
I don't answer him for a long while, as I think things over. I should have done that before this, I suppose, but I've been too busy concentrating on the problems of the present rather than those of the near future. Perhaps I have never wholly believed that we would succeed in reaching Castle Van Alder, which made planning for the future rather pointless. Eventually I say: "So what do you think that I should do?"
