Though it's dark, Baras spots the fork in the road and we make our turn,
about 150 degrees. It will take us slightly north of Castle Van Alder, to
a town called Wellspring. From there we can make our way south towards
our final destination. This road, Baras tells me, is not travelled as
often, so stopping points are fairly far apart. If all goes well, we'll
rest one night at a roadside inn, our second night in Wellspring itself,
and reach the castle sometime on the the third day. I'm anxious to get
there, especailly as it means I'll be able to see my children again.
As we ride on through the night, the rain eventually tapers off. As dawn breaks, the sun struggles to break through the clouds. We stop to rest ourselves and our horses for a bit before continuing on. Baras helps me dismount, and to my non-surprise, my legs and backside are as sore and stiff as I expected them to be. There's no chance of a fire, as any available wood for kindling is totally soaked (as are we). Baras offers me some dry (well, previously dry, anyway) biscuts that he'd packed from the inn last night. I eat a bit, but i'm really not hungry. I stifle a yawn, having only got an hour or so of sleep last night. I'll manage though, I'm still young enough to get away with an all-nighter on occasion. We still have a ways to go, but it looks like we haven't been followed so far. Edgar Salley will be mad, I'm sure, but he dosen't have the reach or the wherewithal of someone like Gustav. I don't fear him as a mortal enemy and a threat to my friends and family. It's not likely he'll pursue me as some grand punishment for defying him. He'll find a new girl for his bed and continue on his way. The sun finally breaks through the clouds. I look up and smile a bit, hoping for clear weather and a speedy journey. Baras is smiling too, but at me instead. "You look lovely in the morning light, Harry. Much as I'd love to stay and admire you, we really should be off again." I smile at his compliment, then shake the stiffness out of my legs, and accept his help up onto my mount. Soon, we are off again.
