Keeping it Simple

I enter, followed by Baras, who closes the door behind us.

"What are you doing here?" Gustav asks me. "You're supposed to be entertaining Leopold."

"I was, but then he said he wanted to talk to you, so I came to fetch you."

"A strange moment for him to choose. And you could have sent the guard for me, you know, rather than come yourself. Or Leopold could have come to me. Oh well, I suppose I'd better see what he wants."

He gets to his feet and walks towards the door. That takes him past Baras, who in one smooth motion draws his sword...

1. And sinks it deep into Gustav's chest.
2. And sees its blade bounce harmlessly off the chain mail undershirt that Gustav secretly wears.
3. Baras is fast, but Gustav reacts amazingly quickly. A moment later, it is Baras who lies dying on the carpet, whilst Gustav extracts his dagger from the body.
4. At the same instant I pull out the knife that I've persuaded Baras to give me. Two blades are better than one.
