Gustav wouldn't have just Baras killed, I reflect. He would think that I
had encouraged him, and I would die too. But Baras's idea of escape won't
work.
"I've learnt that Gustav's arm is very long," I say. "We'd be quickly recaptured. And he has threatened that, if ever I attempt to escape, my friends will pay for it." Baras looks hurt. "So you won't help me then? I thought that you liked me better than that. And after all that I've done for you." "I didn't say that I wouldn't help you. Ever since I was brought here, I've been plotting to kill Gustav. Partly for revenge, partly to break up his crime ring, and partly because it's the only way for me to escape without my friends suffering. So will you help me to kill Gustav? Then we'll escape, and with any luck there will be so much confusion and infighting that there'll be no effective pursuit."
