"I am keeping you alive because, so long as you are, I have a hold over your friends," Gustav tells me. "Were I to kill you, they might go to the King. I am reasonably confident that my position is so secure that even that would represent no more than a minor setback, but why take the risk? Besides, you have already proved that you can be profitable, so why should I throw away an asset? And, unlike last time, you won't even think of trying to escape, since if you should manage to get away I will abduct the charming young Sara to be your substitute."

I can't think of any way out of this. I had suggested to Don that I hide a knife in my cloak, and attempt to assassinate Gustav. He pointed out that, if I was successful, Gustav's men would be almost certain to kill me on the spot.

Gustav carries on: "As for your future..."

  1. "It's back to Madam Scarlet's for you. As the novelty of your pregnancy proved so unexpectedly popular with the punters, from now on you will spend as much time as possible in that condition."
  2. "You'll be working at my mansion, providing special services for my most favoured clients. Some of them have the most surprising fetishes."
  3. "Apparently Sultan Arif of Artazia is willing to pay good money for attractive young women for his harem." I know that if Arif gets his hands on me again he will have me executed.
  4. "I 'persuaded' Sara to tell me what she knew of your history. That gave me an amusing idea."
  5. "You'll find out soon enough."
