Don's carried out lots of missions for the King, so should have no trouble getting to see him." (Don is no longer in the room, having left when Sara demanded that she be allowed to talk to me privately, though he looked none too happy about it.)

"That sounds hopeful," I say.

"Yes. I'm sad that John is in such terrible trouble, but I can't say that I'm all that surprised, given the kind of life he was leading. But how did you get involved? Oh!" Her hand goes to her mouth as she puts two and two together. "He was one of your clients, wasn't he?"

"Yes, he was, but there was rather more to it than that. He helped me escape from the brothel where I was working, and that's what got him into trouble. That's why I have to help him."

"I can't believe that these criminals would be that bothered about the escape of one whore."
