An Unlikely Reunion

"What the- Harry? Is that you?"

"Yes Don, it's me." Unbelievable. Just when I'm in need of help, he somehow manages to walk back into my life. The how and why can wait for later as we embrace (gently, as I'm holding Chloe at the moment.) Don also offers a hearty welcome to Teran, who responds a bit coldly, and a polite hello to Moula. If he's curious at all by the twins, our scanty dress, or Teran's injuries, he's being polite enough not to say so.

"It's been, what, almost seven months since we went our seperate ways in Theras, hasn't it? How have you been? And what in heaven's name has brought you to the home of my esteemed father-in law?"

"Father-in-law!" I gasp in surprise. But then, is it really so surprising? Don was supposed to wed a nobleman's daughter in an arranged marriage. That was why we split up in the first place. [2742] Come to think of it, the evident "new money" of this family likely made a good match with Don's cash-poor but distinguished lineage. It's amazing coincidence that I would associate with another member of this family, albeit in a very different way.

Don chuckles. "Yes, indeed. My young wife is a bit shy, but I will be sure to introduce you later. Now, really, you must tell me what you've been up to." This is the moment I've been dreading, since I didn't want Don to ever find out what fate befell me. It seems unavoidable now. Just then, the babies begin crying, as it's almost time for their noon feeding.

"I'll explain everything, I promise, but can we go inside first? We really need to see the Marquess, his son is in great danger. Also, I need to take care of these little ones."

"His son? I didn't think he..." he stammers, Then, sensing our urgency, "Of course - follow me."

I can almost see the gears turning in his head as he puts the pieces together. Maybe when he saw the babies at first, he thought they were Moula's. When he realizes I'm nursing them, he'll figure out they're both mine. As soon as he cottons on to that, he'll realize with the timescale involved that not only are the children mine, but also his.
