Bad News

"And how are we going to do that?" Teran asks wearily. "Even if we could catch up with them before they reach Theras, those two mercenaries are good. If John and I couldn't defeat them, then me - injured - and two girls would have no chance. Besides, they have too big a lead. We'd never overhaul them. No, our only chance is to proceed with the original plan. If John's father will help us - and surely he will when he hears what has happened to his son - and he can get the King to intervene, then when Gustav gets what's coming to him John will be freed. Assuming that he's still alive, of course."

"You think that they may kill him?"

"It's certainly a possibility. First they will probably torture him to try to find out where you have gone. After that, they may decide that killing him is the easiest way to make sure that he can't pose a threat to them."

"Poor John!" I feel terribly guilty. If he hadn't helped me, he wouldn't be in such a dire situation.

1. "We must make all speed to John's father's castle," I say.
2. "I must return to Theras. If I give myself up to Gustav, perhaps he will release John. I'd rather go back to being a whore than be responsible for his death."
