In the end you give up protesting. "It's very good of you," you tell Xorn.
"Think nothing of it," he says. "Just come with me, and we'll go over to the Accommodation Office and get something arranged for you." The clerk in the Accommodation Office rather reminds you of a purple octopus. It doesn't take long for him (or she or it) to come up with something that your new friend assures you should be suitable. Xorn pays with something looking very like a credit card, which is swiped through a machine. Presumably there is some security system that checks that Xorn is the rightful owner of the card, but you can't spot what it is. The cherk then enters your name on his computer as being the new tenant of the apartment. As Xorn guides you out of the door you say: "Wait a minute! I forgot to ask for the key." Xorn smiles. "You won't need one," he says. "Didn't you realise that the clerk took a retinal scan of you? That was electronically sent to your front door. All you have to do is to look at the correct spot on the door, which is clearly indicated, and it will open for you. Nobody else can enter - except for the police, who can override the system."
