The anklets are removed in a matter of minutes, and we make our way out
of the smith's shop. Once outside, I turn to Teran.
"What did you say to him to make him change his mind? You didn't threaten him with violence, I hope?" "Violence? Me?! Absolutley not!" he says in mock surprise. "I noticed he was wearing a wedding ring. So, I simply told him that if he didn't do what we asked, I'd make sure word got back to his wife that two 'whores' visited him at his shop today, and let her draw her own conclusions from that. He obviously saw the logic of avoiding that particular situation, and offered a much better price!" We all share a laugh at Teran's quick thinking. We stop to rest a minute by the riverside, where Moula and I make a good show of throwing the now broken faux gold jewelry into the water. There's a bit of a breeze on this early spring afternoon, and I shiver a little. "John, is there any chance of buying new clothes for us?" I ask. "Even without the anklets, people are going to be drawing conclusions based on our appearance."
