Fortunately, there's a downward sloping roof below my window, and I am
able to jump to the ground off of that. I realize belatedly that I've
left my coin pouch behind, but what's done is done. I quickly turn the
corner behind the inn, so Gustav won't see me when he inevitably looks
out the window. Around the front of the inn, I see a man who I recognize
from the party as one of Gustav's henchmen. It a good thing he wasn't
watching the window, or I would've been caught for sure. However, he's
too preoccupied guarding their horses out front to have come along the
side where my window was. Nevertheless, I can't go back to the main road,
so I continue down the side alley.
I work over in my mind the chain of events that must have happened for this to occur. Gustav was initally suspicious of me when he first saw the paper in my shoe, but didn't find anything missing when he checked his records. While I was able to hide my subterfuge and possibly allay his concerns by swapping the papers and hiding the evidence at the party, my flat rejection of him at his bedchamber door (of which I unequivocally have no regrets) must have re-aroused his suspicions. So, after I left, he probably went back to his study and took a closer look, and discovered the missing page. But how did he track me down so quickly? It occurs to me that Gustav dosen't have the name of the inn I was staying at. I was picked up by coach from the club. He must have gone there first (as they'd still be open at the time) and got the information from Marco. I pray he didn't treat too harshly with him or Katia. Assuming Marco gave him the inn I've been staying at, he sent men there (they appear to be riding in the saddle, and thus could be travelling much faster than even by coach) and when they didn't find me there... I need to get through the night and deliver the evidence to Cornelius in the morning, which is still a few hours off. But it won't be easy. I've no idea how many men Gustav has hunting for me, or where I might be able to find shelter. I clearly can't go back to the inn I've been lodging at. It was impractical to walk that far when I left Gustav's, and even more so now that I'm clad in only my thin white chemise and knickers. Besides, Gustav's men may still be waiting for me there. I realize with a start that if Gustav's men manage to gain access to my room there, they'll also have possesion of the remainder of my clothes and money. I have nowhere to go, and nothing to my name. What am I to do?
