The shock immediately sobers me up. "I'm not sharing your bed!" I say.
Gustav frowns. I don't think that he anticipated the possibility that I might refuse. No doubt most barmaids in this city would jump at the chance of sleeping with such a rich and powerful man. "Suit yourself," he says. "But if you don't, you'll be out of a job tomorrow - no, it must be well after midnight by now, so make that today. The club won't dare defy me if I tell them to sack you." Gone is the charming public persona that I've seen until now. I realise that underneath that surface veneer is someone who can be ruthless and unpleasant. That shouldn't be a surprise. I imagine those traits are needed to be successful in big business, let alone in crime. No doubt he thinks that I can't afford to lose my job. But in that he is mistaken. I've obtained all the evidence about his criminal activities that I need, and I trust Cornelius to find me new employment. "All right, if that's the way you want it," I say. His eyes widen in surprise.
