After my late night, I don't make a very early start to the day. It is
late morning by the time that I see Cornelius. He tells me that Gustav is
a very wealthy and powerful businessman. Though there have been rumours,
there has never been any proof that he is involved in anything
illegal. "But I wouldn't be at all surprised if he turned out to be the
man that we are after," he says. "His engaging you for this party that
you've told me about could be a big break for us. I know that you're
nervous about it, but please don't get cold feet and back out. There must
be an excellent chance that you'll overhear something significant."
After seeing Cornelius, I have just enough time for lunch before it's time for my afternoon shift at the club. I'm not expected to work the evening shift as well on this occasion. Not only is there no need, but I'm keen to get an early night as the party the next day will probably go on pretty late. The day of the party dawns. I spend the morning and early afternoon wandering round the city, looking at some of the sights, since I won't be working at the club today. Gustav has arranged for his own coach to pick me up from the inn at 6pm. I enjoy the unaccustomed luxury of being conveyed in the carriage, which is drawn by four horses guided by a uniformed coachman. Gustav meets me at the main entrance to his impressive mansion, and escorts me to where the bar has been set up. "The first guests will be arriving in half an hour or so," he tells me. "You'd better get changed. There's a room through there that you can use. Your costume is laid out for you." I go though the indicated door, and find myself in a small, but comfortable, room. Sure enough, my costume is ready for me.
