Fortunately Gustav doesn't take any more liberties with me, but nor do I
overhear anything that is in any way suspicious. Eventually Marco returns
from his errand, and when I get an opportunity I have a word with him.
"You didn't warn me about Gustav," I say. Marco looks slightly guilty. "I'm sorry. I forgot. I'm afraid that the unwritten rules of conduct that apply to the rest of the customers don't hold for him or his drinking cronies. He could get this club closed down with no trouble at all if he chose to, so we daren't risk antagonising him." "So where does that leave me?" "So far he and his friends have never done anything worse than an occasional grope. And they tip very generously. But if you'd prefer it, I can try to arrange things so that as far as possible you only serve other customers."
