A Talk with Marco

"You didn't warn me about Gustav," I say.

Marco looks slightly guilty. "I'm sorry. I forgot. I'm afraid that the unwritten rules of conduct that apply to the rest of the customers don't hold for him or his drinking cronies. He could get this club closed down with no trouble at all if he chose to, so we daren't risk antagonising him."

"So where does that leave me?"

"So far he and his friends have never done anything worse than an occasional grope. And they tip very generously. But if you'd prefer it, I can try to arrange things so that as far as possible you only serve other customers."

1. "No, don't do that," I say, not wanting to be deprived of the chance to overhear Gustav's conversations with his friends. "It wouldn't be right for me to be treated any differently from the other staff."
2. "Thank you. I'd appreciate that."
3. Before I can reply, Gustav comes over. Apparently he's having a party at his home in a couple of days' time. He'd like the club to supply the booze and glasses, and he's so taken with me that he'd like me to serve the drinks.
