That will mean my working fourteen hours but, wanting to seem to be
obliging, I agree. It's not as if this afternoon has been very taxing, as
only a couple of customers have been in. Marco says that at some point in
the early evening I can have a half hour break when there's a quiet
period. Though the club does not serve food to its customers, there is a
small kitchen and pantry for the use of the staff, so I will be able to
have something to eat and make myself a hot drink.
"We normally have two girls on in the evenings," Marco tells me, "but Marie is away visiting her sick mother at the moment. So it's really annoying that Katia hasn't showed up. I'm very grateful that you're willing to help out. I'll assist you, but I have to go out for a couple of hours later on, so you'll be on your own for a while. I should be back in good time to lock up for the night, though. Luckily this is usually a fairly quiet evening, so I think you'll be able to cope." "Supposing there's trouble while you're gone? Someone getting drunk and belligerent, for example?" "Just ask the other customers to throw him out for you. They're a pretty good bunch, on the whole. But it's unlikely that anyone will cause any trouble. Anyone who does has their membership revoked, so all the hotheads get weeded out pretty quickly." I am a little surprised that Marco is willing to leave me in charge of the place when I've only just been hired, but I suppose that a big factor is that there won't be any takings that I might be tempted to run off with.
