The horse and the saddle both belong to the De Freydair family, so I feel
that when I separate from Don I will have to leave the horse with him, to
keep or to sell as he wishes (selling it would probably be more practical
for him). The loss of a horse would have hit the family hard, in their
present poor financial position. Therefore going to look for Hendrik's
cottage doesn't seem viable. It would be a couple of days journey on foot,
and I wouldn't have any money or supplies.
"When we reach Theras I shall be leaving you," I tell Don. "I'm sorry, but I feel that it's the only thing that I can do. I couldn't return home with you, given the circumstances, and it will be better for both of us that I go sooner rather than later. Please remember to thank your father for me. He has been very kind." Don looks stunned. "You'll go off on your own? But what will you do?" "I don't know yet. But Theras must be quite a big place, so I imagine that something will turn up. If nothing better presents itself, I expect that I can find work as a barmaid."
