I have noticed that older women here often do wear a veil, so the costume
seems like a good one. The veil is thin enough that I can breathe through
it and that it doesn't much affect my vision, but thick enough that my
face can't be seen at all clearly. I wonder whether I should ask for
gloves, just in case someone notices that the skin of my hands (the only
exposed skin) isn't wrinkled, but I haven't seen anyone wearing gloves, so
to do so might arouse suspicion.
When dusk falls, Zal takes me to Market Street. As far as I can tell, nobody we pass gives me a second glance, which is reassuring. Arriving at our destination we look around for a suitable hiding place. Many of the shops lining the street have living accommodation above them. Zal doesn't think that such a shop would be a good choice, as anyone entering or leaving the accommodation would have to pass through the shop and might see me. Eventually we spot a shop that has no upper floor. It is selling carpets, and I would be able to hide behind one that is on display whilst having a good view out of the window. Even better, the window has a portion at the top that can be opened, so I would be able to hear as well as see. The shop has the "Closed" sign up, and the inside appears dark, so we are reasonably confident that the owner has left for the night. "If we can get you inside without attracting any attention, this would be ideal," Zal says. "I'll try to ensure that my rendezvous with Maris later on tonight takes place right outside."
