Since I do want to live, I don't struggle. I don't recognise the
voice. It's not Maris then. One of his men, perhaps? Or has a bounty
hunter somehow found out about my presence in the monastery, together with
how I am disguised? Since whoever it is has killed at least one man, he
must think that getting hold of me is very important, whether because he
hopes to be well paid or for some other reason.
"Turn around - slowly so that I can keep in behind you," the voice orders. "Good. Now walk slowly forward. Yes, we're leaving. Pity you won't have the chance to thank the monks for their hospitality." I'm now regretting not having followed my impulse to flee when I found the murdered monk. We pass his body once again, and then come out into the open. I realise that I would have been far better off had I only stayed in my room, as that would have made finding me far harder. Unless the man had a contact on the inside, who not only told him that I was here but just where he could expect to find me? My captor has an accomplice waiting for him outside. It's too dark for me to get a good look at him. They securely tie my hands and feet and then dump me into the back of a horse-drawn cart. If the two men are bounty hunters, then our destination will presumably be the palace.
