I'm shocked by what I am told. Who could have betrayed us to Arif? It must
have been someone that Captain Usman totally trusted, as he was the only
one who could have told the betrayer that Teran was helping me. Unless
that information was tortured out of Usman, a possibility which I really
don't want to think about. I just hope that he and Munaf haven't paid the
ultimate penalty for their help.
I wonder why Maris wasn't aware that there was a price on my head. Or perhaps he was, and contacted these two men before coming here, with the idea of sharing the reward? That would make sense, as it would explain why these men were able to recognise me in spite of my disguise. Unless they saw me with Teran when we entered the city, recognised him, and put two and two together? "I have eleven and a half gold pieces, which you can have if you will let me go," I say, without much hope. One of the men laughs, and grabs the pouch that hangs from my shoulder. "You had eleven and a half gold pieces, you mean. They will pay for our incidental expenses. The price on your head is a lot more than that: forty gold pieces, with another ten for Teran. The Sultan must want you very badly."
