A Setback for Maris

When I see Maris enter the bar, I naturally fear the worst. What has he
done to Teran, that he could manage to escape? And, more important still,
what is he about to do to me? At least he didn't go to the palace,
it seems, for if he had then I would probably have been surrounded by a
platoon of guards rather than facing just Maris himself.
He barges his way through the crowded bar and makes as if to grab me. That's when he gets an unpleasant surprise and I get a pleasant one. "Leave the girl alone, Vosk!" someone shouts. (Evidently at least some of the drinkers know him, and by that name rather than as Maris.) Another customer grabs the arm that Maris was about to take hold of me with and holds him back. "Yes, leave her alone," he says. "She's all right. She's bought us all drinks." "You don't understand," Maris says. "She's dangerous, she's a murderess."
