"Even so, two are much less at risk than one, especially if the extra person is a well-built man. And besides, I do have a weapon. I wield a mean walking stick." He brandishes it and grins at me. I see that I can't dissuade him, though I'm nervous that he might find out that my story was not altogether true once we reach our destination. "Then thank you." We set off. Fortunately the trail is for the most part no more than dried mud, so it's not uncomfortable for me going barefoot.
