Stretching the Truth

The Black Void - Episode 2384

"Well, I'm not from around here." I begin, wondering what to say next. If he knows everyone in the village, he'll likely learn about the barfight sooner or later. So I construct what seems to me to be a plausible story:

"I was at the tavern last night, when a brawl broke out. Most everyone in there got involved, including the man who brought me there. I managed to get out the back door, and though I'd take a walk until things settled down. I must have become disorented and ended up wandering into the woods. I... was a little drunk at the time." I finish with mock embarrasment. I feel bad about lying, but the truth would be even more unbelivable, take a lot longer to tell, and possibly put me in more danger.

He seems satisfied with my explanation. "I appreciate your hospitality, sir, but I really must get back on the road." I say, wanting to find Teran and Richard before they give up the search for me.

He frowns a little, then nods, understanding. "Wait a moment." he says, going into the back room. He returns with an old shirt for me to wear. It's baggy, falls past my waistline, and I have to roll up the sleeves, but I feel a lot less exposed now. He also offers me a old pair of his boots, but they're far too large for me, and I give up on them after a few steps.

"One last thing." he says.

  1. He packs some fresh bread, cheese, and a wooden canteen of water into a small satchel. He hands me the bag, and gives me directions to the village. I thank him again and set off.
  2. He packs some fresh bread, cheese, and a wooden canteen of water into a small satchel. He tosses the bag over his shoulder, then grabs a walking stick. "What are you doing?" "I'll take you back to town." he replies.
