You won't expect me to describe in any detail what happens next, I hope. The Sultan (I still don't know his name!) proves to be a skilful and tender lover, and I soon find myself enjoying the experience. I'm not in love with him yet, but given a little time I could easily see myself falling for him. I do worry a little about the risk of my getting pregnant, however, as of course no precaution is taken against the possibility. In fact I imagine that one of my duties will be to provide the Sultan with children, preferably sons.

Eventually we both drift off to sleep.

Something wakes me up in the middle of the night.

  1. But I soon fall asleep again.
  2. The Sultan is shaking me to wake me. What's up?
  3. Someone is hammering on the door of the bedchamber, making enough noise to wake not just me but the dead as well. It must be an emergency of some kind. Fire? Revolution?
  4. A man is in the room, carrying a candle to light his way. It's not the Sultan. He moves towards the bed, and then I see a dagger in his hand. It's an attempt on the Sultan's life!
