After spending the
last several hours in naked captivity, I'll take whatever clothing I can
get. I sprint out to the laundry line,
grab a couple of mostly dry items, and hurriedly put them on.
I pull the first item, a beige peasant's dress, over my head. It reaches to just above my knees. (a bit short for my liking, though I've certainly worn shorter skirts than this in college) The other garment is a weathered green cloak. I wrap it around my shoulders, realizing that if need requires, the garment has an attached hood I could use to cover my head. Finally dressed again, I leave the stable area quickly, since I don't want to be around when the leader gets back. I also don't want whoever hung the clothes to see me walking around in their belongings. Ducking behind a building across the street, I feel I am safely out of sight of both the stables and the clothesline. I stop to catch my breath and consider my options. I've no real knowledge of this city or its people, other than the negative first impression of the raiders. Don has escaped, and is out there somewhere, undoubtedly looking for me, but probably on the run from the raider leader, or the authorities, or both. He could be injured or, god forbid, killed by now. I examine the coins in my hand, not sure of their worth. Certainly not enough to buy passage out of this city to friendly territory, wherever that may be. I decide my best bet, then, is to enter the city proper, to hopefully find Don, or failing that, to find someplace safe to rest until he can find me.
