Out of the Stall

The Black Void - Episode 2066

I know that I am likely to have only a very short time before the boy reports what he has seen and someone comes to investigate. So I need to get away fast. There are three items that I could take with me if I chose - the dagger, the coins and the bucket - but anything that I take I will have to hold in my hand, having nowhere else to put it, and I want to keep at least one hand free. I decide that the coins are the most likely to be useful, and so I pick them up and hold them in my left hand.

I emerge from the stall, and then cautiously poke my head out of the stable door. I can see the stable yard, to my relief currently empty, and beyond that a stretch of the road that passes the stables and leads into the city proper through the main gate a little further on. [2045] Unfortunately I can see that at this time of day the road is fairly busy (when I was brought here it was dawn and there was no-one about), and if I venture outside naked as the day I was born I am bound to attract a lot of unwelcome attention.

  1. But I decide that anything is better than staying where I am, since that would almost guarantee that I finish up either in prison or at the slave market.
  2. I'm in luck. There's a line of drying washing strung across the yard. The selection is less than ideal, but I grab a couple of items and hurriedly put them on.
  3. There's another building across the yard. Perhaps inside it I can find somewhere to hide until dark. Or if I'm really lucky, even discover some clothes.
  4. But just then someone enters the yard and sees my head sticking out of the stable door.
