Hiding Ruth in the Dead of Night

The Black Void - Episode 205

I have ways of handling secret reading material. I sign out the book. It is a slim paperback that fits easily into my overstuffed loose leaf. It will be a couple of years until a backpack is grafted on to my shoulders. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

I don't get to touch Ruth Montgomery until I crawl into bed that night and after my nightly dose of Bible reading. I've been reading the Bible every night since eighth grade and now read it sporadically when something interests me. The religion, spirituality, and mysticism bug bit me when I was ten years old and I've been scratching its itchy bite ever since.

My room is a museum of secret mystic and religious practice. A cross drawn elegantly in many colors of crayon hangs behind one of my pictures. Other documents are secreted in a large office mail envelope taped to the back side of my bulletin board. Pamphlets bought from the Hare Krishnas are stuffed between old Mad Magazines in my night table. When I get done with Ruth, I hide her in my night table drawer or at least I try.

Unfortunately, the night table drawer is full of unused hair bands, now that my hair has grown out, my money box which is getting full, (Secret projects require secret cash), paper clips, and assorted junk from God only knows where. Ruth needs another hiding place.

  1. Slip Ruth Montgomery between the mattress and box spring.
  2. Put Ruth Montgomery inside the cover of a New York Times magazine.
