The first thing I notice about the hits is that the title of each page
appears to be "HTTP 404 FILE NOT FOUND." The second thing I notice is
that the homepage of the library's computer, whose search engine I used,
ends in a .igy extension. Odd.
I exit the library and head for the administrative office to figure out what's going on. I ask to meet with whoever the technical supervisor is at the school. The secretary tells me his name is Mr. Wilbur and asks me my name. "Why?" I ask. "Oh, it's school policy, dear. All people who meet with a member of the administration must have a name." "Well then, I'm Holly...er, Holly Jordan." The secretary types my name into the computer to bring up my student profile. "There seems to be a problem, Holly. Your name is not on file with the school records office. You must be a new student. I suggest you go to the I-wing to meet with the New Student Office." "But I'm not--" The secretary cuts me off. "Just fill out this form and take it to the New Student Office. The people there will help you." I cannot get the secretary to talk to me again. Without any better alternatives, I sit down, take out a ballpoint pen, and begin to fill out the form. When it is finally finished I exit the administrative office and proceed to the I-wing. "Hi, I'm Holly Jordan. I'm not new here, but I think the computer lost my records, so I filled out this form to remind it." The person I am talking to is a disinterested old lady who is currently filling in the dark squares of a crossword puzzle with correction fluid. "Put it in the pile over there." The lady motions to her left without looking up from her puzzle. There is a small pile of papers in the tray. I add mine to the top of the stack, and leave for the cafeteria. In the cafeteria I seem to have a choice of either passenger pigeon or dodo meat, and the vegetable of the day looks something like a gingko plant. I elect for dodo meat and the vegetable of the day and wash it down with Great Basin brand bottled water. It looks like I won't be able to meet with Mr. Wilbur until at least tomorrow, but by now I'm starting to realize it's not the computer's fault. I am no longer at my normal high school. Something happened when I passed through that wormhole at the shopping mall. My mind hurts just thinking about it. Luckily, the bell rings and I exit the cafeteria.
