I don't have much hope that any of our math teachers would understand, so
I go to the library. Several of the books on the math shelf turn out to
have a chapter or two on imaginary and complex numbers (a "complex number"
being one that has both an imaginary and a real part to it, like my
example of square root of negative one plus five). But the books are all
very dry, and don't show any evidence of the imagination that I am looking
for.
That leads me to contemplate the relationship between the words "imagination" and "imaginary" for a moment, before I sit myself down at one of the Internet-connected PCs that the library has. I bring up a search engine, and type in: "imaginary numbers" mysticism. To my delight, I get a large number of hits.
