As soon as the coast is clear, I move as quickly and quietly as I can
down the right passage, hoping to find some kind of exit. I chose right
so as to move in the opposite direction from the line of captives. My
mind flashes back to the sounds of gunfire and the screams of those
terrified
women. Once I escape this place, maybe I can contact the authorities
and somehow rescue them.
I finally catch a glimpse of a glass door at the end of the hallway, with sunlight beyond it streaming through. I quicken my pace and throw open the door. I am caught completely off guard by what awaits me outside. I feel a blast of heat as soon as the door swings open. The sunlight is blinding. I raise my hand to my forehead to sheild my eyes. Looking out, I see before me a vast and desolate desert. Howling winds blow dust and sand through the air, shifing massive dunes. I can make out nothing against the hazy horizon, just desert. I scan each direction, finding the same thing, at least as far as my eyesight will allow. Sand, endless sand, with the occasional cactus or rock formation. No water sources, no signs of civilization. "There has to be something out there" I say to myself, wiping sweat from my brow. But can I really risk striking out into the desert, alone, and with no water or supplies, nevermind any idea which direction to go? My other option is to go back into the building, and risk getting captured, or even shot.
