Sarah the Elf (or eat your heart out, Tolkien)

The Black Void - Episode 13

Sarah's face still hurt. The pain was a good thing because she did not want to think about the plastic surgery she might require, especially since she did not have health insurance. Who says that temporary Christmas help ever gets insurance, and they need it!

Sarah had been acting as an escort at Bergdorf Goodman's that afternoon. Her job was to lead the little slobbering brats known as children to Santa's lap where Lynne, the lucky stiff, got to photograph them. Sarah only had the job because she needed money to pay the rent. There is not too much work for aspiring atonal composers in Manhattan, and they get charged the same rent as anyone else. Sarah was thankful that the work included overtime and that she looked good in green tights and a short costume.

It hadn't been a bad job except for the cranky toddlers, until this afternoon. The kid had small green eyes, and when Sarah was leading it to Santa's lap it said: "Want to hear a secret?" Sarah hoped it would be a dirty joke and hoped it was nothing serious. She leaned down to hear the secret and that was when the kid bit her face. Sarah did not remember if she screamed. The bite had broken the skin and it had bled too.

Her supervisor sent her to get the first aid kit, so Sarah left the floor and began rummaging around in the closet for the thing, when the lights went out. Everything went black. When the lights came on again, Sarah was not sure where she was. She was strolling through a spring forest that could have come out of a little kid's fairy tale book. Birds were chirping. The trees had bright green leaves and the ground was covered with lots of little white, pink, yellow and periwinkle blue flowers.

"I must be losing it," Sarah, the elf, thought. Then Sarah wondered if where she was walking just might be real. She could pick some flowers. That way she'd have proof when and if she ever got back to New York. Then Sarah heard the singing. It was meant to be sweet and melodic but, with Sarah's sophisticated musical tastes, she thought it was cloying. Oh well, maybe she could at least tell whomever was singing to shut up.

  1. Sarah walks in the direction of the singing.
  2. Sarah picks some flowers for "proof" that she is not losing it.
