Two Dead Men

The Black Void - Episode 117

The man lying face up is, you surmise, about as tall as you--that is to say, not very--and weighs considerably more. He has dark brown hair parted on the left and is wearing a white lab coat on top of tennis shoes. The other man appears to be the exact opposite--tall and lanky, with only a few strands of white hair coming from the sides of an otherwise bald head. There is no blood around either of them. You examine the lab coats, looking for identification but finding none. You then check the pockets of the two men--nothing. That's odd, you think. No wallet, no keys, no anything. As you move the bodies back to their original position, you notice something else that seems wrong. Both ring fingers of both men have been cut off!

As you ponder how anyone could cut off four ring fingers and leave no blood on the floor, you stand up and make sure that everything is as you found it, in case the murderers come back. You haven't even taken a step, though, when you feel cold metal sticking into your back. Your heart rate rapidly increases, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, and your body tenses to lash out at whoever is behind you.

Have the murderers returned already? What could possibly be sticking into your back? You know you didn't hear a safety catch being released. Had someone already done that?

You spin around to your right, kneeing your would-be assailant where you think the groin would be. All you get is a throbbing pain in the knee. You weren't expecting solid metal. It's that android again, or a different one. You're not sure.

You look at the android, relieved that whatever had been pushed into your back must have been just its arm. "Ma'am, you have been warned once to stay away from the manufacturing area," the tinny voice says. "This is your second warning. We will not give you a third one. If you do not leave of your own volition we will be forced to remove you from the area ourselves."

"But what about the men down here? Surely you notice them, right?" you ask, hobbling around to judge how bad your knee is. It's pretty bad. You're sure it's worse than just a bruise.

The android ignores you and walks away.

  1. Maybe you should take the android's advice and get out of there. You're not sure how long you can keep walking without getting help with your knee.
  2. You're a tough woman, and there's still a mystery to be solved. Continue searching the room.
