Amanda notices someone in the buffet, a tall, burly man with dark
hair. "Shoot - that can't be right. He disappeared. You're taking his
place. Something's wrong here."
I'm completely befuddled. "That man over there - he's the partner that just disappeared." I nod. It's my chance to proved to her that I can play it by ear. "Hello, Amanda. Who's this? A wealthy client?" I stick my hand out. "Abraham Cook. I'm in the oil business." I don't know whether that's my real name, or a name I remember from somewhere else, but it seems to work. "Jesse Vance. Amanda and I go back - quite a ways. Amanda, can I talk to you in private?" "Sure." "I hope you don't mind, Mr. Cook. We'll just be a minute." He takes her over to a staff entrance to the buffet; then they go through the door. Not very suspicious - he was in the same kind of tuxedo as most of the other male employees, so he'd have some cover, and Amanda could at least hide. Five minutes later, and this debriefing is going on way too long. Are they -? No, I hope not. But it's a possibility. On the other hand, maybe she's taking forever because she's trying to convince him that I should be trusted. Or any of several thousand other possibilities. Still, it's feeling like quite a while, and I did want to learn more about the mission, or more specifically Amanda. "Your water, sir?" It's the waiter. I nearly jump, having been so focused elsewhere. "The young lady - she still wants the water?" "Yes. She's in the - ahem - ladies' room." I hope that will at least buy some time until the waiter comes back. Three minutes later, and still no sign of Amanda. This is really starting to get on my nerves.
