The Envelope

The Black Void - Episode 1028

I'm not so sure at first that it's a good idea to pick either one. After all, it was just offered to me by a bunch of talking fake palm trees. For all I know, this could be some kind of drunken hallucination and I'll just end up looking like an idiot. Still, if I accept the existance of weird swirly dimension warps, which I guess I do, talking fake palm trees aren't that much of a stretch. And something in my gut tells me that I'm in the kind of situation where completely random items I pick up might turn out to be useful in unexpected ways. Besides, how could I possibly look more like an idiot than I already do? So I decide to pick up one of the gifts.

The tall blue foil package, I notice, is ticking rather ominously. The envelope is about the shape of a book and isn't ticking. I like books. Well, better than bombs, anyway. So I decide to accept the envelope. But when I pick it up I hear the fake palm trees snickering behind me. My gut also tells me that I'm in the kind of situation where the obvious choice is nearly always wrong. Still, to hell with it. A bomb's a bomb. So knowing I'll probably regret it, I open the yellow envelope.

It's a book, alright. A large, somewhat cheap-looking trade paperback. The title is:

  1. A Completely Infallible Stragegy for Winning Money in Casinos, by Professor Knott A. Hoax
  2. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Sorcery, by Belboz the Necromancer
  3. Jake Gruenwald: An Unauthorized Biography, by Petra Woodward. I now remember that Jake Greunwald is my name.
  4. If You Read This Book, You Will Die. No author was given.
